Jim is the son of long-term missionaries and the grandson of long-term missionaries on both sides of his family. He spent most of his formative years in East Africa and graduated from Rift Valley Academy. By then, he had seen his parents’ (and grandparents’) constant faith in God, consistent lives, and compassion for those around them. He knew that unless God directed elsewhere, he wanted to dedicate his life to making disciples of Jesus Christ at "the ends of the earth".
Jim met Barb—a New Jersey girl—at Wheaton College. He quickly realized she was out of his league. When he found out she too was preparing for a lifetime of mission ministry, he knew he had to pursue her. They were married in 1979. After Barb graduated in 1980, they spent the summer on the newly purchased campus of The Master’s Mission. The following year, they headed to Africa to replace furloughed missionaries.
Upon returning from Africa, Jim finished an engineering degree at John Brown University and spent the subsequent twelve years at The Master's Mission facilities in North Carolina. There he helped develop the campus and the missionary training program, and began teaching missionary candidates.
In ‘93, they returned to Africa as missionaries. They spent 20 years as pioneer church planters at "Loiyangalani" in North East Kenya.
Currently, Jim and Barb reside at The Master's Mission where Jim serves as the Executive Director. He also pastors Little Snowbird Baptist Church, which is a member of the Cherokee Baptist Association, in the Cherokee Nation. The Master's Mission is currently recruiting the next generation of leadership for the Mission. Jim and Barb are looking forward to serving in Africa again soon.
